Looking at this photo has taken me to a time in 2019 July where I was debating whether I still wanted to go through with the decision of getting an open myomectomy surgery.
As much as I needed to get well from my then submucosal and intramural fibroids, I knew I also wanted to be a mum one day. Since I didn’t have experience to ascertain this fact, I wasn’t sure the surgery would preserve my fertility. I had stories of scar tissue after surgery causing infertility. I was uneasy and tensed but I knew I also needed to get well.
I am grateful that 2 surgeries later i.e. an open myomectomy and a laparoscopic surgery my fertility is intact.
Here I am now to help you ascertain what treatment options would preserve your fertility from my experience.
While location, size and number of fibroids do dictate the type of treatment a doctor would prescribe for your fibroids, desire for children should also be put into consideration when consulting on the best surgery you would want to have.
I have done a previous article in detail on how fibroids cause infertility and affects the growth and viability of a pregnancy.
If you haven’t read it, click here.
I will mention some of the reasons without so much elaboration so as not to digress from today’s topic.
1.Obstructing fallopian tubes.
2.Distortion of the endometrial cavity
Also, you need to understand the different types of treatment options available before deciding on the best possible option for you.
I have done a more detailed article here
Information is power and my hope is you leave here empowered!
Now, let’s delve into the treatment options that preserve fertility:
1.Endometrial and Radio-Frequency Ablation
The risk of a miscarriage is higher with these two options since heat is used to destroy the fibroid tissue.
2.Uterine Artery Embolization
With this method the arteries providing blood supply to the fibroid tissues are cut.
This could in the long term cause a change in ovarian function and placental abnormality.
3.Laproscopic and Open Myomectomy
For an open myomectomy which is equivalent to a CS (more invasive) there is the risk of scarring but a higher breakthrough of preservation of your fertility because of a more precise dissection of fibroid tissue from the womb since the doctor has a larger surface area to work with.
With a laparoscopic myomectomy which is a surgery that is a less invasive there is less damage of irreplaceable reproductive tissue.
It is important to mention that I have undergone these last 2 procedures. In both cases I was able to conceive.
The open myomectomy though was my most successful surgery yet that left me not only fibroid free but with now a 15 months old son.
If you are deciding on what surgery is best for you to preserve your fertility, I do hope this article was informative and will lead you a step closer to making a more informed choice.
All the very best.
